Samsung used Apple’s first foldable iPhone launch as an opportunity to revive one of tech’s longest-running rivalries, mocking the new iPhone Duo as a case of “reheating our leftovers.”
The jab came from the official Samsung Mobile US account during Apple’s September 9 hardware event. As Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, Samsung posted a string of sarcastic messages aimed at its longtime competitor, including the line, “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers,” accompanied by a winking emoji.
The timing made the target clear even though the post did not need to name Apple directly. Samsung has been selling book-style foldable phones since the original Galaxy Fold reached the market in 2019, giving the company years of experience in a category Apple is only now entering.
Apple officially describes the iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. The device uses a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch internal display, with both screens designed around the same aspect ratio so content can move between them more naturally. It is powered by the A20 Pro and is scheduled to open for U.S. preorders on October 16 before availability begins on October 23.
Samsung’s newest Galaxy Z Fold8 provides the obvious competitive backdrop for the joke. Samsung lists the Fold8 with a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main display, while emphasizing a lighter 201-gram design and the company’s continuing refinements to foldable hardware.
That overlap does not prove that Apple copied Samsung. “Reheated leftovers” is a marketing attack from a rival, not a technical finding. Apple has its own hardware, software and design choices for the Duo, while Samsung is using its earlier entry into the foldable market as the basis for the comparison.
The exchange also shows how Samsung plans to respond to Apple’s arrival in the category. Rather than treating the iPhone Duo as validation alone, Samsung is publicly framing Apple’s late move into foldables as evidence that Galaxy devices were already doing much of what Apple is now promoting as new to iPhone users.
For consumers, the more meaningful result will be competition between mature Galaxy foldables and Apple’s first attempt at the format. For now, Samsung is making sure the launch conversation includes a reminder that it was folding phones years before the iPhone did.
