Witch on the Holy Night is officially heading to theaters outside Japan, with the TYPE-MOON adaptation beginning a broad international rollout in January 2027.

The anime film, also known by its Japanese title Mahoutsukai no Yoru, will first open in Japan on November 20, 2026. International screenings will follow roughly two months later through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with release dates now set across North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and India.

For North American audiences, Witch on the Holy Night opens in the United States and Canada on January 29, 2027. The release will be available both in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub.

Brazil is scheduled slightly earlier, on January 28, alongside Mexico, Chile, Central America, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. The same date also covers several European markets, including Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

The international rollout begins on January 21 in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Austria, Germany and German-speaking Switzerland follow on January 26, while France, Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland are set for January 27.

On January 29, the movie expands to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland, Poland, Sweden and India. Spain and Kazakhstan are currently scheduled for February 5, meaning the wider theatrical campaign starts in January but continues into the following month.

The film is produced by ufotable, the studio behind major TYPE-MOON adaptations including Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel], as well as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Witch on the Holy Night adapts the visual novel created by TYPE-MOON and written by Kinoko Nasu. The original Japanese PC release arrived in April 2012, while an updated version later brought the story to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch with an official English localization. A Steam version followed in 2023.

The story takes place in the late 1980s and centers on Aoko Aozaki, a high school student secretly training as a modern-day magician. She lives in an old mansion with Alice Kuonji, another young woman with deep ties to the supernatural.

Their carefully guarded life changes after they encounter Sojuro Shizuki, a boy who has recently moved to the city and becomes entangled in secrets that were never meant to be exposed.

The official Japanese site describes the movie as the beginning of one girl’s story and positions the relationship between Aoko, Alice and Sojuro at the center of the adaptation.

Haruka Tomatsu voices Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa returns as Alice Kuonji and Yusuke Kobayashi voices Sojuro Shizuki. Aniplex lists Kinoko Nasu and TYPE-MOON as the original creators, with ufotable handling animation production and Toho and Aniplex distributing the film in Japan.

The project has been in development for several years. Its theatrical adaptation was first announced in December 2021, and ufotable gradually revealed new footage and visual material before confirming the November 20 Japanese premiere in July 2026.

The new international announcement is therefore a major step for viewers outside Japan, particularly because it establishes a relatively short gap between the domestic premiere and many overseas screenings.

For TYPE-MOON fans, the theatrical release also brings one of Kinoko Nasu’s foundational stories to animation through a studio closely associated with the company’s most recognizable adaptations.

Witch on the Holy Night opens in Japanese theaters on November 20, 2026. Its international theatrical rollout begins January 21, 2027, with Brazil scheduled for January 28 and the United States and Canada for January 29.
