Godzilla is back, and TOHO and GKIDS are making it clear that the monster survived the events of Godzilla Minus One.

The first theatrical trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero opens by confirming that Godzilla was not fully destroyed and quickly shifts into another large-scale extermination operation as Japan faces a new crisis in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film.

The footage is accompanied by a new theatrical poster and a striking visual motif: mysterious blue energy surrounds Godzilla while bright gold lightning cuts through the sky above him.

TOHO and GKIDS have not explained what that energy means or identified the new threat teased in the film’s official synopsis. Some viewers have speculated that one of the sounds in the trailer could point to another famous kaiju, including King Ghidorah, but no such character has been officially confirmed.

The official synopsis is deliberately ominous. Japan has struggled to recover after the war and Godzilla’s previous attack, only for a new threat to suddenly shatter that hard-won peace. The tagline adds that there will be no third time and that everything ends here, but neither TOHO nor GKIDS has said that Godzilla Minus Zero will be the final film in this continuity.

The trailer also introduces several newly announced cast members. Masami Nagasawa plays Makoto Aoyama, described as a genius weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau. Jun Kunimura joins as Dr. Ogata, while Ko Maehara plays Akira Hagiwara, an assistant to Professor Murakami, portrayed by Min Tanaka.

Motosuke Iida is also returning as Akio Itagaki, the Toyo Balloon section chief who contributed to the Godzilla extermination operation in Godzilla Minus One. Kenji Misuhashi, Eita Okuno and Kai Inowaki are among the additional cast members announced alongside the trailer.

Director Takashi Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter and visual effects lead after Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Godzilla Minus Zero continues the story of the Shikishima family while moving the setting forward to 1949.

The production is also notable for its technical format. TOHO and GKIDS say Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production to be Filmed For IMAX, using IMAX-certified high-definition digital cameras and imagery and sound optimized for IMAX theaters.

The film will make its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26. It opens theatrically in Japan on November 3, followed by a wide North American release on November 6.

The November 3 Japanese release once again lands on Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the original 1954 film’s theatrical debut in Japan.
