M. Night Shyamalan’s next film starts with the shape of a romance before turning toward something far more unsettling.

The first teaser for Remain introduces Jake Gyllenhaal as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal town to complete his latest project. There he meets Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor, whose presence gradually pulls him out of his shell and into a mystery hanging over the town.

For much of its opening stretch, the teaser leans into a warm romantic tone. Tate and Wren spend time together, trade playful looks and seem to form a connection that could belong to a conventional love story.

Then the mood changes.

Doors open onto darkness, Wren appears increasingly difficult to understand and the footage begins suggesting that something about the relationship may not obey ordinary rules. The marketing stops short of confirming exactly what Wren is or explaining the supernatural-looking events around her.

That distinction matters. The teaser strongly invites ghost-story speculation, and comparisons with Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense are understandable, but Warner Bros. has not officially identified Wren as a ghost.

The studio’s synopsis instead says Tate encounters an alluring young woman who pulls him into the center of a deadly mystery affecting the town.

Remain is also an unusual collaboration between Shyamalan and bestselling romance author Nicholas Sparks. The two developed the underlying story together, while Shyamalan wrote the screenplay and directs the film. Sparks serves as an executive producer and also developed the story in literary form.

That combination is visible in the teaser’s structure. The early footage emphasizes intimacy and emotional connection before Shyamalan’s familiar sense of unease begins overtaking the romance.

Gyllenhaal and Dynevor lead a cast that also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders.

The film had previously been scheduled for 2026, but Warner Bros. moved it into the Valentine’s season. Remain will open in theaters across North America on February 5, 2027, with the international rollout beginning February 3.

The studio is promoting the film around Valentine’s Day, but that campaign should not be confused with a literal February 14 North American release date.

For Shyamalan, the teaser presents a familiar setup built around perception, grief and the possibility that the audience is not seeing the full picture. For Sparks, it preserves the emotional center of a relationship that appears capable of crossing boundaries the characters themselves may not fully understand.

Exactly how far the supernatural element goes remains deliberately unresolved.
