Activision and Infinity Ward have officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, setting a release date of October 23, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The new entry moves the Modern Warfare line into another large-scale military conflict, while also marking a notable platform shift for the franchise.
The game will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, which makes Modern Warfare 4 a clear current-generation transition point for Call of Duty. Activision says the title is being built for current-generation consoles and PC, with a focus on scale, responsiveness and consistency across modes. For PC players, the company is also pointing to platform-specific optimization, expanded graphics options and support for modern performance features.
The biggest headline beyond the release date is the setting. Modern Warfare 4 centers its campaign around a fictional war on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea launches a large-scale invasion. The story follows a young squad of South Korean soldiers fighting to survive on collapsing front lines, while Captain Price operates separately on a personal mission that brings him into the wider crisis.
That setup gives the campaign a more contemporary geopolitical edge than some recent Call of Duty stories. Infinity Ward is positioning the game as a darker and more cinematic chapter for Modern Warfare, with missions that move across several international locations. Official material describes campaign sequences involving trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and major assaults to reclaim occupied territory.
One of the campaign’s central perspectives is Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time. The story begins with a routine patrol that quickly turns into a fight for survival as the conflict expands. That character-level framing appears designed to keep the campaign grounded even as the scale grows into a broader global crisis.
Captain Price also returns, but the new story presents him from a more unstable position. Following the events of the previous Modern Warfare storyline, Price is described as pursuing an off-book mission from the shadows while being hunted. That gives Modern Warfare 4 room to connect with established series history while also introducing new characters, new regional stakes and a different campaign structure.
The announcement also gives a clearer picture of how Modern Warfare 4 will approach multiplayer and DMZ. Activision describes the multiplayer side as grounded and precise, with an emphasis on fluid movement, player choice and greater control during engagements. Full details about maps, weapons, modes and balance changes are still expected later, but the early positioning suggests Infinity Ward wants the competitive side to feel tactical without losing Call of Duty’s speed.
DMZ is also part of the package. Official descriptions frame the mode around operating behind enemy lines, choosing objectives, securing resources and deciding when to extract before the situation escalates. That points to a survival and infiltration loop rather than a simple arena-style multiplayer format, although the full structure, progression systems and launch content have not yet been fully detailed.
Nintendo Switch 2 support is another major part of the announcement. Modern Warfare 4 is coming to Nintendo’s new console, and Infinity Ward is working with Digital Legends on a native Switch 2 version. Activision says more information about Switch 2 preorder timing will arrive later, but the platform inclusion is significant because Call of Duty has been absent from Nintendo hardware for more than a decade.
Preorders are already rolling out for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net and Steam. Activision lists Digital Standard, Digital Vault and Physical Standard editions, with the physical version limited to consoles. The company also says Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Game Pass at launch. Preorder benefits include early access to the open beta and the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, while the Vault Edition includes additional operator packs, weapon content, BlackCell access for one season and a DMZ Deployment Bonus.
The Warzone side of the franchise is also changing as part of the transition. Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression will integrate with Call of Duty: Warzone beginning with Season 1, which is planned to arrive after launch. At that point, Warzone will no longer be playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. New downloads on those platforms are scheduled to end earlier, with the in-game store also being removed before the Season 1 changeover.
For players, the announcement answers several major questions at once: the release date, the supported platforms, the absence of last-generation consoles, the return of a Modern Warfare campaign led by Infinity Ward and the franchise’s move onto Nintendo Switch 2. What remains unknown is just as important, including the full multiplayer map list, exact beta dates, Warzone integration details, performance targets and the full scope of DMZ at launch.
For now, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 looks positioned as both a narrative continuation and a technical reset. It keeps familiar Modern Warfare elements, including Captain Price, global missions and cinematic military action, while moving the series toward current hardware and a broader platform strategy. As more official information arrives, the key question will be whether Infinity Ward can turn those ambitions into a campaign and multiplayer package that feels fresh without losing the core identity that has kept Call of Duty at the center of the shooter market.
