Nintendo is turning part of its recent U.S. tariff refunds into a major sales promotion rather than announcing direct cash payments to customers.
Nintendo of America has announced a Customer Appreciation Sale running from September 12 through September 26 in the United States, with 30% off dozens of Nintendo Switch digital games and bundles.
The promotion will also include savings on selected physical games, downloadable content, accessories, amiibo and apparel. Deals will be available through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store and participating retail locations, with products and offers varying by retailer and sales channel.
What makes the sale unusual is Nintendo’s own explanation for why it is happening.
The company says the Customer Appreciation Sale is its way of thanking Nintendo players for their continued support and that the promotion was made possible in part by tariff-related refunds. Nintendo also says it absorbed most tariff-related costs and that the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible.
That statement follows Nintendo’s August financial results, which disclosed that the company recorded approximately $300 million as a reduction of cost of sales during the first quarter of its fiscal year ending March 2027 in connection with refunds of tariffs imposed under the U.S. International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA.
In the same financial material, Nintendo said the tariffs connected to those refunds were primarily borne by the company rather than passed on to consumers through product prices.
The accounting treatment matters when discussing whether the money represents a consumer refund. Nintendo described the roughly $300 million as a reduction in its own cost of sales, not as money collected on behalf of customers.
The new promotion also does not announce checks, rebates or direct cash refunds for people who previously purchased Nintendo hardware or software. Instead, Nintendo is explicitly linking part of the benefit from the tariff refunds to discounts available during the Customer Appreciation Sale.
The sale is notable because Nintendo describes it as one of its largest promotions ever. The headline offer is 30% off dozens of digital Nintendo Switch games and bundles, while additional discounts will extend beyond software to physical products and merchandise.
Nintendo Switch 2 owners are also part of the audience for the campaign. Nintendo says customers can revisit Nintendo Switch adventures on either Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, reflecting the newer system’s support for compatible Switch software.
The timing follows a period in which tariffs have become a significant financial issue for the games hardware business in the United States. Nintendo’s own financial disclosure provides unusually specific context: approximately $300 million in tariff refunds materially reduced cost of sales in the quarter and contributed to the company’s improved gross profit.
That does not mean every dollar of the refund is being spent on this promotion. Nintendo only says the Customer Appreciation Sale was made possible in part by tariff-related refunds, and it has not disclosed the amount allocated to the discounts.
It is therefore more precise to describe the sale as partially supported by those refunds rather than as a $300 million giveaway.
For customers, the practical result is a two-week window for discounted Nintendo products across digital, physical and retail channels in the United States. Nintendo has not presented the promotion as a direct reimbursement program for earlier purchases.
More details and eligible products are expected to be available through Nintendo’s sales channels as the Customer Appreciation Sale begins.
