An unofficial DLSS 5 experiment in Grand Theft Auto V is going viral for all the wrong reasons, with NVIDIA’s new neural rendering technology pushed hard enough to make Los Santos look less like a graphics upgrade and more like an AI hallucination.

The footage comes from community testing rather than an official Rockstar Games implementation. Modders have been forcing DLSS 5 Neural Rendering into games that were never built around the technology, including GTA V, Control and Cyberpunk 2077.

In one GTA V clip shared by SwurvGaming, the neural pass dramatically changes lighting, surface detail and the appearance of the scene while the player drives through Los Santos. The result is striking, but also unstable enough that parts of the image can appear overprocessed or visually detached from the original art direction.

Another test became a meme after Michael De Santa’s face was altered so aggressively that SwurvGaming joked that he had “yassified” the character. The effect changes facial shading and perceived structure enough to make Michael look noticeably different from Rockstar’s original model.

Those clips should not be treated as a preview of how GTA V would look if Rockstar officially added DLSS 5.

NVIDIA released DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering in September 2026, debuting the technology in NBA 2K27 on GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware. In NVIDIA’s official implementation, the neural renderer is not intended to operate as an uncontrolled beauty filter layered blindly over a finished game.

Instead, NVIDIA says DLSS 5 uses the engine’s rendered frame, including color, geometry-related buffers, lighting information and motion vectors, as the foundation for its output. The model then adds more complex lighting and material responses while remaining anchored to the game data supplied by the engine.

The company also emphasizes developer control.

Studios can choose between different neural models, adjust structure and tone intensity, apply semantic masks and isolate specific objects or asset groups. In other words, developers can decide where the neural effect is allowed to make visible changes and where the original presentation should be preserved.

That distinction is critical when looking at the extreme GTA V experiments circulating online.

GTA V was released long before DLSS 5 existed and was not authored with NVIDIA’s new neural rendering pipeline in mind. Community tools are effectively injecting the technology into a game without the same level of engine integration, asset-specific tuning or art-direction controls that an official implementation would receive.

The resulting images can therefore exaggerate exactly the kinds of problems NVIDIA says its production workflow is designed to control: facial identity shifts, excessive tonal changes, inconsistent material treatment and details that feel disconnected from the original artwork.

The experiments are still useful because they demonstrate how powerful the neural renderer can be when given aggressive settings. They also illustrate why the technology has become controversial.

Traditional DLSS features primarily focused on reconstruction and performance. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, while Frame Generation creates additional frames to improve perceived smoothness. DLSS 5 moves further into the final visual presentation by generating richer lighting and material detail.

That gives developers a larger creative toolset, but it also means poor tuning can have a more obvious effect on how a game actually looks.

NVIDIA argues that its official system is designed to preserve character identity and temporal consistency. The company says the model operates deterministically, uses motion vectors to maintain frame-to-frame stability and can be constrained through artistic controls.

NBA 2K27 provides the first official example. NVIDIA and developer Visual Concepts use the technology to enhance skin response, hair lighting, contact shadows and material detail while preserving the facial geometry of scanned athletes.

That is a fundamentally different scenario from taking a community runtime and forcing it into GTA V.

For players watching the viral clips, the safest conclusion is not that DLSS 5 will automatically make games look distorted. What the footage shows is how dramatically neural rendering can alter an image when it is applied outside a properly tuned development pipeline or pushed to extreme settings.

It also offers an early warning about implementation quality. As DLSS 5 reaches more games, the technology’s reputation may depend as much on how developers use its controls as on the neural model itself.

GTA V does not currently have official DLSS 5 support from Rockstar Games. The clips circulating online are community experiments and should be viewed as such.
