Final Fantasy VII Revelation is returning to the spotlight later this month, with Square Enix confirming that the upcoming RPG will receive a new look during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026.

The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25, with the show beginning at 11 a.m. PT and 2 p.m. ET. Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi will also be involved in the Revelation segment, giving fans another opportunity to see what Square Enix has planned for the third and final game in its ambitious Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.

For now, Square Enix has deliberately kept the description of the Gamescom appearance broad. The company has promised a "new look" at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, but it has not confirmed whether that means a new trailer, an extended gameplay demonstration, a developer presentation, additional features, a more precise release date or some combination of those elements.

Hamaguchi's participation makes the appearance particularly notable, but fans should not assume that specific announcements are guaranteed until Square Enix reveals them during the event.

The Gamescom presentation comes less than three months after Final Fantasy VII Revelation received its formal unveiling at Summer Game Fest. Square Enix announced the game as the concluding chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series and confirmed a Spring 2027 release window.

Revelation will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PC version is planned for Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox PC. Unlike the earlier entries in the remake project, the final chapter is therefore being positioned as a multiplatform release from the start.

That launch will also arrive during the 30th anniversary year of the original Final Fantasy VII, which first appeared in 1997.

What Square Enix has already shown

Although the exact contents of the Gamescom presentation remain unknown, Square Enix has already revealed a substantial amount about the direction of Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

The game's initial presentation showed a much larger emphasis on planetary exploration. Players will be able to travel through the world aboard the Highwind airship and choose locations to approach from the air, including the ability to parachute into areas below.

Square Enix describes the world as interconnected and designed to give players greater freedom in deciding where they travel and which objectives they pursue.

The combat system continues the approach established by Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, combining real-time action with command-based tactical elements. Revelation will expand the available party with newly playable characters, including Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine.

Another confirmed addition is the FITS system, which introduces outfits associated with class-inspired abilities and movesets. Square Enix has previously shown examples drawing from traditional Final Fantasy jobs such as Black Mage and Warrior.

These established features give Gamescom several possible areas for Square Enix to explore. The company could focus on world traversal, combat, character mechanics, the FITS system or material that has not yet been publicly detailed. However, none of those possibilities has been officially identified as the focus of the August presentation.

A major Gamescom appearance before the 2027 launch

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will appear as part of Gamescom Opening Night Live, the annual showcase that precedes the main Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany.

Opening Night Live 2026 takes place on August 25, while the main Gamescom event runs from August 26 through August 30. The opening show is hosted by Geoff Keighley and is built around game announcements, trailers, updates and world premieres from publishers across the industry.

For Final Fantasy VII fans, the timing makes the event an important checkpoint between Revelation's Summer Game Fest unveiling and its planned Spring 2027 launch.

The game still does not have a specific release date beyond that seasonal window. Square Enix also has not indicated that a precise launch date will be announced at Gamescom, so any expectation of one should be treated as speculation for now.

The final chapter of the remake project

Final Fantasy VII Revelation completes the trilogy that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024.

Square Enix has characterized Revelation as the conclusion of the remake project's main story, with Hamaguchi emphasizing that the trilogy is intended to reach its conclusion within the base game.

That distinction is relevant as anticipation builds around the final installment. Revelation is not being presented as an intermediate chapter or another setup for a fourth main entry in the remake series. It is the planned endpoint of the three-game project.

Players who have save data from Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will also be eligible for in-game bonuses in Revelation. Square Enix has announced Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia for Remake Intergrade save data and Phoenix Summon Materia for Rebirth save data.

With the basic structure, platforms, release window and several gameplay systems now public, the biggest question surrounding Gamescom is simply how much further Square Enix intends to go.

The company has only promised a new look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation. That makes the August 25 presentation worth watching, while leaving the specifics of what Hamaguchi and Square Enix will reveal firmly under wraps until Opening Night Live begins.
