Photos of what is claimed to be Grand Theft Auto VI collector packaging are raising a new question about Rockstar’s physical release strategy: why does a box apparently designed for premium merchandise appear to include a circular slot that looks large enough to hold a game disc?

The images were shared online by X user Alexi0982 and later circulated by outlets including Eurogamer Portugal. They show a large black box marked with Grand Theft Auto VI branding, “Vice City: Leonida” text on the top and multiple internal compartments.

One of those compartments is circular and closely resembles the shape used to hold an optical disc.

That visual detail is notable because Rockstar has already confirmed that the standard physical version of GTA VI will not contain a disc.

According to Rockstar Games Customer Support and the Rockstar Store, physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI will ship with a digital download code inside the box. The company says explicitly that a disc will not be included. Physical copies are scheduled to become available from November 12, one week before the game’s November 19 launch, so buyers can redeem the code and begin preloading.

Rockstar also says there is no physical version of the GTA VI Ultimate Edition. Players who buy the physical Standard Edition can separately purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store after redeeming their game code.

That makes the alleged collector packaging more intriguing, but it does not confirm that Rockstar is preparing a secret disc-based edition.

The provenance of the box itself remains unofficial. Alexi0982 said he had worked on assembling the boxes for about a month and acknowledged that sharing the photos could put his account or employment at risk. The original images were subsequently removed, according to Eurogamer.

Until Rockstar announces a Collector’s Edition or confirms the purpose of the circular compartment, the safest interpretation is simply that the packaging appears to have a disc-sized recess.

There are several possible explanations that do not require a physical game disc. The slot could be intended for a soundtrack disc, a decorative item, a placeholder used during packaging production or an accessory whose final purpose has not been revealed.

Rockstar has precedent for separating collector merchandise from the game itself.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Collector’s Box, released in 2018, included physical items such as a metal tithing box, collectible coin, playing cards, treasure map, bandana, pin set and other memorabilia, but it did not include a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2.

That history makes it entirely plausible that a future GTA VI premium package could similarly focus on merchandise while requiring the game to be purchased separately.

The new photos are also arriving after Rockstar opened GTA VI pre-orders in June and detailed its launch editions.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar currently offers Standard and Ultimate digital editions, while the physical Standard Edition is a code-in-box product.

The Ultimate Edition adds a large collection of in-game content, including vehicles, weapons, apparel and other bonuses integrated into Jason and Lucia’s story. Physical Standard Edition owners can upgrade digitally at any time after activating their copy.

Because the official physical release contains only a download code, any suggestion that the leaked collector packaging proves the existence of a disc should be treated cautiously.

The photos do support a narrower observation: the interior includes a circular recess that visually resembles a disc holder.

Whether that space is actually intended for a game disc, another type of disc or something else entirely remains unconfirmed.

For now, Rockstar’s public position has not changed. GTA VI’s physical Standard Edition is still described as code-in-box, and the company says no disc will be included.
