Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct appears to have been one of the biggest game showcases of the year, with third-party audience estimates putting its peak viewership above Gamescom Opening Night Live and at more than twice the peak of PlayStation’s latest State of Play.
The Game Business reports that game marketing analytics company LevelUp measured the Zelda-focused Nintendo Direct at 2.1 million peak viewers.
That figure is not an official audience number released by Nintendo. It is an estimate from LevelUp, and it should be treated as third-party measurement rather than a first-party statistic.
Even with that distinction, the comparison is notable. According to the same LevelUp data cited by The Game Business, Gamescom Opening Night Live peaked at 2 million viewers, while PlayStation’s September State of Play reached 1 million.
That would put the Zelda presentation slightly ahead of Gamescom’s showcase and at roughly 2.1 times the peak audience reported for Sony’s event.
The same comparison also places the presentation far above Nintendo’s Mario Kart World Direct from April 2025, which LevelUp measured at 930,000 peak viewers.
For additional context, The Game Business says LevelUp measured the Grand Theft Auto VI reveal at 4.1 million peak viewers on YouTube when Netflix viewing is excluded, meaning Zelda’s estimated audience was substantial without approaching GTA VI’s peak.
A separate analytics company produced an even higher estimate for Nintendo’s anniversary broadcast. Streams Charts reports that The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct reached 2.24 million concurrent viewers across the livestreams it tracked and generated more than 1.8 million hours watched.
Streams Charts says Nintendo’s official YouTube channels attracted the largest share of the audience, while community co-streams also contributed to the total. Because analytics providers may track different channels, platforms and co-streams, their totals are not directly interchangeable.
The agreement between two independent measurements nevertheless points to a very large live audience for the September 8 presentation.
Nintendo used the Direct to celebrate The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary and to show the first gameplay of its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma presented the game and confirmed a November 5, 2026 launch date. Nintendo says the remake features completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, faster loading, smoother performance and revised camera and movement controls.
The presentation also covered a The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 system and accessories, anniversary concerts, new amiibo figures, additional Zelda Notes features and the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie.
Audience comparisons between showcases should still be read cautiously. Event length, distribution, official restreams, community coverage and the platforms included in each analytics provider’s methodology can all affect peak-viewer totals.
What the available data does support is a narrower conclusion: the Zelda anniversary Direct drew a live audience in the neighborhood of 2.1 million to 2.24 million peak concurrent viewers under two separate third-party measurements, making it one of the strongest recent game presentation audiences measured by those services.
