Sony and S-Game have announced a dedicated State of Play for Phantom Blade Zero, giving the upcoming action RPG nearly 20 minutes in the spotlight just months before its October release. The showcase is scheduled for August 17 at 7 p.m. PT and 10 p.m. ET, with the developer promising an extended look at gameplay, combat systems, characters and player builds.
But the game itself is not the only subject dominating the conversation around the announcement.
According to a report from IGN, replies to Sony's State of Play announcement quickly filled with criticism of PlayStation's decision to stop producing physical discs for new game releases beginning in 2028. Some players are encouraging others to flood the livestream chat with messages opposing the move, raising the possibility that discussion surrounding Phantom Blade Zero could be overshadowed by a controversy that has nothing to do with S-Game or the game itself.
The reaction reflects a broader dispute that has continued since Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its physical media policy on July 1. Sony officially said physical game disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. After that point, new releases will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and through retailers in digital formats. Games released before the transition are not retroactively affected by the policy.
That distinction is important for Phantom Blade Zero. The game is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, well before Sony's January 2028 cutoff. The future disc policy therefore does not make Phantom Blade Zero itself a digital-only release. Questions about what physical purchasing options will be available for a particular game remain separate from Sony's longer-term platform strategy.
IGN reports that some PlayStation users nevertheless used Sony's Phantom Blade Zero posts to renew their criticism of the company's plans. Comments referenced concerns about game preservation, long-term ownership and consumer choice, while others predicted that the State of Play livestream chat would be dominated by messages opposing the end of physical game production.
The scale of the response is also visible on Sony's own announcement about the 2028 transition. The PlayStation Blog post announcing the physical disc decision accumulated thousands of comments, with users debating digital ownership and the future of physical collections. Sony has presented the transition as a response to changes in consumer behavior, saying digital media has increasingly overtaken physical formats among PlayStation customers.
Sony's latest financial data provides context for that argument. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, the company reported an 82% digital download ratio for full-game software across PS4 and PS5. Sony calculates that figure by dividing the number of full games sold through digital transactions by total full-game software unit sales.
The number shows how important digital distribution has become to the PlayStation business, although it does not settle the wider debate about ownership, preservation or whether consumers should continue to have a physical option.
For S-Game, meanwhile, the August showcase represents one of the most substantial opportunities yet to demonstrate what Phantom Blade Zero will actually play like.
The official PlayStation announcement says the dedicated State of Play will contain nearly 20 minutes of new gameplay. S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang said the presentation will go deeper into the game's combat and systems than the recently released extended pre-order trailer could accommodate. The presentation is also expected to introduce previously unseen characters and show how players can shape individual builds.
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action RPG developed by S-Game and powered by Unreal Engine 5. Players control Soul, a warrior caught in a conspiracy while facing a rapidly shrinking amount of time to uncover the truth. The game mixes martial arts influences with a darker visual style that S-Game has previously described as "Kungfupunk."
The new promotional campaign has also revealed a notable addition to the project. Martial arts star Donnie Yen has served as a creative consultant on Phantom Blade Zero since 2023, contributing his experience in martial arts and action filmmaking to the game's combat design. Yen also performed facial and motion capture for Mó Yuan, the father of protagonist Soul.
Pre-orders for Phantom Blade Zero are now open on PS5. Sony and S-Game have confirmed an October 29, 2026 release date, with pre-order bonuses including early access to the Treasure Basin accessory and Legacy outfit. Both items will also be obtainable through normal in-game progression, according to the developer.
There is one additional point that remains firmly in rumor territory.
IGN reports that fans previously spotted what appeared to be a Phantom Blade Zero demo page on the PlayStation Store before it disappeared. That discovery has led to speculation that S-Game could release a playable demo alongside the August 17 State of Play. Neither Sony nor S-Game announced a demo in the official State of Play post, however, so a potential shadow-drop should not be treated as confirmed.
For now, the confirmed focus is the gameplay presentation itself. Phantom Blade Zero will receive nearly 20 minutes of dedicated State of Play coverage on August 17, giving S-Game a major platform to show its combat systems and build variety ahead of the October launch. Whether the livestream conversation remains focused on the game or becomes another outlet for PlayStation's physical media controversy may be another story entirely.
