Shuhei Yoshida says he was surprised by one of the most unexpected PlayStation developments of the year: Sony ending its collaboration with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT before Xbox stepped in as the project’s new publishing partner.

The former PlayStation executive posted a short reaction on X on September 10 after the publishing change became public. In Japanese, Yoshida wrote a phrase that can be translated roughly as, “That surprised me…”

When another user asked whether his reaction was specifically about the PHYSINT news, Yoshida confirmed that it was.

That reaction carries unusual weight because Yoshida spent 31 years at Sony Interactive Entertainment and became one of the most recognizable public faces of PlayStation.

He joined the original PlayStation project in 1993, later served as president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, and eventually led PlayStation’s independent developer initiative. Yoshida left Sony in January 2025, ending one of the longest executive tenures associated with the brand.

His surprise also reflects how closely Hideo Kojima’s work has been associated with PlayStation for decades.

PHYSINT was originally announced during a PlayStation State of Play presentation in January 2024 as a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Kojima described the project as a return to the action-espionage genre and said it would use cutting-edge technology to blur the line between games and movies.

That made the September 2026 reversal particularly striking.

PlayStation said it had made the difficult decision to end its collaboration with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT while emphasizing that it continued to admire Kojima’s vision and valued its broader relationship with the studio.

Kojima later provided additional context. He said Kojima Productions had unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June that the PHYSINT project under their collaboration would be canceled.

According to Kojima, PHYSINT remained too important to the studio to abandon. Kojima Productions then spent roughly three months searching for another partner that could allow development to continue.

That search ultimately led to Xbox.

Xbox and Kojima Productions announced that their existing relationship would expand beyond OD, with Xbox taking on publishing duties for PHYSINT. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was honored that Kojima had chosen Xbox as the project’s new partner.

Kojima, meanwhile, said the two companies share a common vision for the future and reiterated that development on PHYSINT is continuing.

The announcement does not yet establish every platform on which the game will eventually launch. Xbox is confirmed as publisher, but neither Microsoft nor Kojima Productions has provided a definitive platform list for PHYSINT.

That distinction is important because the publishing change has already generated speculation about exclusivity. At this stage, the confirmed development is the change in business relationship, not a complete platform strategy.

Yoshida’s reaction adds another layer to the story because it shows that the decision was unexpected even to someone who spent decades inside the PlayStation organization.

It does not prove why Sony ended the collaboration, and Yoshida did not publicly criticize the company or provide inside information about the decision. His posts simply make clear that the news surprised him.

For PHYSINT, the practical outcome is that the project survived the end of its PlayStation partnership and now has Xbox as its publishing partner.

For observers of the games industry, however, the sight of a Kojima action-espionage project moving from a PlayStation-backed announcement to Xbox publishing remains one of the more unusual shifts in recent platform history.
